Do Vitamins Cause Weight Gain?

May 16th, 2009 · 56 Comments

Vitamin tablet pillsI recently heard someone ask, “will taking vitamin make me gain weight?”. I never really considered a connection between vitamins and weight gain, so I decided to investigate the subject and do some research.

I found that daily multivitamins may be recommended for weight gain for people who are underweight, not overweight! I think some overweight people may have overheard the words, “weight gain” and “vitamins”, and come to the conclusion that their multivitamin was making them fat…

Apparently, lack of vitamins in some people may make it hard for them to gain weight, and starting to take these vitamins helps weight gain (this is what I have read online, I don’t know how scientifically accurate it is). Online, I did read about a few firsthand experiences of people gaining a few pounds after starting their vitamin supplements, so I definitely think there is some truth to vitamins and gaining weight.

So, if you are overweight, and are asking “will my vitamins make me gain weight?”, the answer is no. Its perfectly safe to continue taking supplements, or begin taking supplement, when you are trying to lose weight.

You don’t need to worry about losing weight while taking a multivitamin, unless of course you are underweight… But I highly doubt that any of us are, so happy vitamin supplement taking!

Thanks for researching this. I never really thought about this topic.

  • 2 barryswife // Nov 7, 2009 at 1:56 pm

I knew it. Thank-you so much for posting this. I consider myself to be normal weight or on the low end of it anyway. Def. not underweight. Every single time I take vitamins I gain 2 pounds within what seems like days. This is not to say it stops there?? When I stop taking vitamins, I loose the weight back off. As long as I am taking vitamins, I can not loose an ounce, even when I’m biking a lot, watching what I eat, nothing. Now to figure out what to do about it. I know I need the vitamins, but who wants to watch their weight keep climbing?

Thank you barrywife. I struggled for almost a year to lose weight I went from 270 down to 215 in about 7 months, yes I am proud of myself. but then I felt as if i needed vitamins when I got to that weight and started hiking, biking and walking so I took multivitamins and in less than two months I have gained 10-15 pounds back yet none of my eating or excersize habits have changed so I will stop the vitamins and see what happens from there. But what you said makes perfect sense. I still need to get to 180 doctors orders imagine when I went in to see him with the weight gain he was not happy. Thank you for the heads up. Rick

This is not true. Zinc causes weight gain.

I am 65 and the only times in my life that I gained weight was when I happen to be taken vitamins. So for me there will be no vitamins.

lately about 1 month ago, i have start consuming the double x vitamins by Amway, and i start to find that my intake of food has increased as a result of consuming the multivitamins. I take only take once of the pills ie multivit, minerals and concerntrated vitamins. The effect of taking, my i tend to be be hungry more therefore eating more. Is it true that taking vitamin can bring to weight gain?

I had gastic bypass a number of years ago and have been maintaing my weight pretty well. Well about 2 weeks ago I started a liquid multivitamin, mulitmineral liquid vitamin and i gained over 15 lbs and my stomach is sticking straight out for the first time. I do not have an appetite and I am miserable. I think I will have to check with a doctor on this one.

  • 9 Daniel // Aug 27, 2010 at 1:18 am

After reading these comments I dont think I will take my multivitamins anymore cause im afraid that they will prevent me from losing weight when excersising.

  • 10 Daniel // Aug 27, 2010 at 1:22 am

Also I noticed that when I take my multivitamins I feel so full that it feels that I just ate 3 slices of pizza.

  • 11 Ann Marie // Sep 14, 2010 at 2:19 pm

I was a normal weight my whole life. Back in March I started taking a multivitamin because I was sick of having stringly lifeless hair. By April I had put on 20 pounds and my diet hadn’t changed one bit! In June we moved and I was still 20 pounds heavier. I started working out 2 hours a day at the end of June. It is now September. I don’t drink anything but water, I’ve cut out refined sugars from my diet, I lift weights and I restrict carbs. I HAVEN’T LOST A SINGLE POUND!! My blood levels are all perfect! The only thing I haven’t changed?? Taking that stupid multivitamin! Starting today I am no longer taking it. I will continue to work out two hours a day and eat right. I am convinced it’s the multi-vitamin causing this weight gain!

  • 12 jes28 // Nov 30, 2010 at 11:50 pm

science seems to be lacking, but every time I go back to taking a multi-vitamin, I gain a few pounds!
I don’t think it’s water retention, but it might be?
Or my metabolism slows down from the pill?
anyway, there seems to be a connection!

  • 13 Dr Karthik Raj // Dec 29, 2010 at 2:51 am

I have observed in a number of overweight, borderline obese and obese people, a significant and a sudden burst of weight gain on taking vitamin pills. This is an excellent randomised group with representation from different age groups, social and physical history and with different vitamin manufacturers. From the data i can only infer that vitamin help siginificantly in the uptake of fat and this poses a serious problem for overweight people. Since doctors and nutritionist prescribe altered diets, we tend to add multi-vits to compensate the nutritional intake. I think this take on vitamin replacement should be revisited.

  • 14 renea22 // Jan 10, 2011 at 11:09 pm

I did a search on weight gain from vitamins to see if what I thought was happening to me was actually plausible or if I was just attributing my sudden weight gain to the wrong thing. It seems from reading the comments that my assumptions may actually be founded in some truth. I started taking a multi-vitamin pack about a week ago, and have since felt continually bloated and have gained about three pounds. Shocking to me, since I am very active and have a pretty high metabolism.

  • 15 sperkins // Jan 13, 2011 at 1:28 am

I’m glad to read this. I was at a comfortable weight and then decided to take a multi vitamin. Within a week I gained 3 pounds. I guess I won’t be taking my multi vitamin any more.

  • 16 Jeanne // Feb 4, 2011 at 1:38 am

I’m not nuts!!!! I am so happy to hear other people feel this too!!! Just going to stick with by Vit D supplement and forget the rest!!!

  • 17 Ayesha SH // Feb 9, 2011 at 8:49 pm

I am so relieved to read that there is a connection between taking multi-vitamins and weight gain. I am 5’5″ and I weighed 119 pounds 4 months back. Today I weight 131 pounds. I started taking chelated vitamins to improve the health of my hair and with that I increased my protein intake. I noticed a sudden increase in my weight. I doubled my work-out regimen 3 months back. But I have not lost a single pound. I guess my mother was right all along. I am going off these chelated vitamins. Thank you guys for sharing!!

  • 18 Chez // Feb 10, 2011 at 9:18 am

Thanks goodness we have the internet so we can search for others who have the same questions we have. I too have battled weight for some time and looking back it seems to tie in with taking vitamins. I will go off them for a while and see what happens.

  • 19 seflorida // Feb 15, 2011 at 4:18 pm

I knew it! I started taking Biotin and vitamin C & E about one month ago and stacked on an unheard of 10 pounds. I have a slim build, high metabolism and normally eat whatever and never gain a pound. I know have nothing to wear! I’m wondering, after taking the vitamins will the weight come off??? Thanks!

  • 20 snwflak56 // Mar 1, 2011 at 6:46 pm

I am so happy I am not the only one with these same questions. I am 5′ 4″ and 120 lbs. I do not feel that I am over weight but I started taking vitamins to help boost my metabolism and increase my energy. I have been working out more and I cannot lose anything! It is s frustrating when I would step on the scale and I was always around 117 and 118 lbs! I think I will stop taking them and see what happens!

  • 21 wondering2 // Mar 4, 2011 at 3:15 pm

I have also noticed a weight gain, but hadn’t thought about the vitamins that I have been taking. My question is for those that gained weight, then stopped the vitamins: Did you lose the weight that you had gained?

  • 22 Fran // Mar 5, 2011 at 12:39 pm

I’m sorry – but I have to disagree with you. I can tell you first hand, that (for me) taking vitamins definitley makes me gain weight. I have tried several brands , multiple times and they all do the same thing – cause me to gain weight. I am trying to lose weight (i’m about 20 lbs more than I should be)….and taking vitamins doesnt help my diet.

  • 23 lizzy // Mar 19, 2011 at 8:09 am

I woke this morning with the idea of researching this question on the internet. I have been baffled with my 3lb weight gain that has coincided with 2 weeks of taking multi vitamin tablet. Nothing else in my diet has changed. I can’t believe how many have had the same experience. Definitely going to ditch them now.

  • 24 me too // Mar 27, 2011 at 1:27 pm

I have had the same problem with vitamins and weight gain, up to nearly 10 lbs in a few weeks. Have had this issue happen a couple times now. Last few months, I increased my vitamin C levels to 3-5 grams per day (most often people take about 1 gram or less) and my TOM cycle lengthened suddenly to 45 days. Started to research on it and found out that vitamin C and possibly other vitamins causes high estrogen levels. High estrogen causes weight gain from what I saw. So when I found out, I was already on my 34th day on my cycle, so I dropped the C. Got my period the next day. So now I’m going to reduce my other vitamins as well (but slowly, particularly on the B vitamins). Hopefully the weight will come off and hormones will be back to normal again.

  • 25 Viper6 // Apr 5, 2011 at 5:50 am

I have stop taking multi vitamins for about 6 months now and I noticed I lost my popup belly. I am 30 year old guy 5’7″ 165 lb. I have been working out since high school and haven’t stop’d. But I noticed when ever I take multi vitamins I start to gain weight on my belly. So after some research and the findings I have stop’d taking them. But I do take omega 3 fish oil and mind power Rx of my brain. It’s working great, I lost the weight I gained and feel great. Try it and see if it works for you.

I started to gain weight in Nov. of last year, after my Dr. told me to start taking a multivitamin and Fish Oil. Since Nov. I have gain 15 pounds. My heart Dr. was very up set with me last mo. I asked him about my pot belly and he said I was just fat, and I was eating the wrong food. I’m so glad to read that other people is having the same problem with multivitamin. I know Its a connection. I have took my last pill tonight.

  • 28 Brewnz // Apr 27, 2011 at 12:04 am

I began moderate bike riding again in January (30+ miles/week) and started taking a multivitamin and fish oil to avoid getting sick (since it’s so cold). I put on 10 lbs in spite of rigorous biking and working out in the gym twice a week. I stopped taking the multivitamin last week and dropped 5 lbs. I think this connection needs to be revisited. (Note: I don’t need to add weight if I plan to ride long distances)

  • 29 Maxine Dodge // Apr 27, 2011 at 3:50 pm

I have always been overweight, and lethargic. I would start a vitamin routine to gain more energy, so I would be more active, but it never seemed to produce the result I was looking for. My energy didn’t seem to increase and I found I was hungrier than before the vitamins. Doctors told me there was no such correlation, I was just looking for an excuse. How many years did I beat myself up, for thinking this. THANK-YOU , it is not” all in my head”!!!

  • 30 Felicia // May 8, 2011 at 5:36 am

Oh my I knew it had to be the multivitamin and when it is in liquied form you gain weigh even faster I have gained at least 20 pounds since taking mulitivitamins. That’s it no more because we all know weight gain makes us look older and it is unhealthy, although the fat may be healthy it is unsightly, however the remedy is probably if you take mulitvitamins you have to be on a low carb calorie diet something the makers of these products refuse to suggest.

  • 31 Pearl // May 10, 2011 at 1:30 pm

I am getting fat and feel heavier. I began taking multivitamins three months ago and have gained 4kgs. I eat my lean protein and greens………for crying out loud i do that TAEBO and i am still not ripped!!No more multivitafattening for me period!!

  • 32 Michele // May 31, 2011 at 2:42 am

I am so glad to read these comments. I have taken multi vitamins for years. I have also gained a lot of weight. It seems to be a lot of water weight. I noticed in the last week or so my stomach felt bloated for hours after taking my multi vitamin. I tried taking it with different foods and different times. Nothing helped. So I stopped taking it two days ago. I already feel better. I already feel lighter. I have been getting rid of a lot of water weight. I am going to try to stay off of it and see what happens. I am going to try to get my needed nutrients from my food. Thank you for sharing your stories. I thought I was losing my mind.

  • 33 Rachelle // Jun 2, 2011 at 10:59 pm

I started taking a few vitamin about 5 months ago: minimum 4G of vitamin c everyday, vit b12, and magnesium. I normally weight around 127 lbs for 5″10 effortlessly, that means i eat what i want and never gained weight. I have gained 13 pounds since then, my jeans don’t fit! i have dieted, and worked out and it seems the scale is stuck. Some people say that vitamins can not make you gain weight because they don’t have calories, maybe they change the metabolism. i am going to stop them for 2 weeks and see what happens.

Im not taking anymore!!! back to normal, my doctor said they are for people with a deficiency and i dont have that so it just adds weight….glad to see the comments…thanks..

I use to weigh 120 pds I began to take vitamins when I was 32 i was in a 3/4 pants size now I am in a 8/9 sometimes 10/11. I do beleive that vitamins do help you to gain weight because it feeds the blood as if you were eating or have eaten. Yes Yes go Vitamins. I am the perfect weight now 150 pds.

What about calcium & vitamin D for postmenopausal women which are necessary to avoid osteoperosis? Is there any correalation between these & weight gain?

  • 40 Kim // Sep 25, 2011 at 10:18 am

OMG I wish I had read this earlier, I have been taking multi vitamins since I gave up smoking 3 months ago, and I have gained weight all around my belly area. I am walking on average 7kms a day, plus I do sit ups, I only eat healthy foods and snacks, yet the weight gain has continued. Starting tomorrow, no more multi vitmains, I will continue with my fish oil, kelp and vit a, but that is it. I will post again in 3 months hopefully with the good news that I have lost the weight that I gained from these silly pills.

  • 41 Mary // Sep 28, 2011 at 6:07 pm

I HAVE BEEN BATTLING THE WIGHT FOR YEARS NOW & I TOO HAVE GAINED WEIGHT WHILE TAKING VITAMINS. THIS POST IS PARTLY TRUE, SO ARE THE COMMENTS. FIRST OF ALL, VITAMINS HELP YOUR BODY WORK BETTER/PROPERLY, MEANING FOOD GETS ABSORBED MORE EFFICIENTLY. SO IF YOU TAKE VITAMINS, YOUR METABO. GOES UP, YOU TEND TO EAT A LITTLE MORE (MOST DONT NOTICE), AND YOUR BODY ABSORBS MORE FAT TOO. THAT IS WHY ONE GAINS WEIGHT.
MANY PEOPLE DONT NEED ALL THE NUTRIENTS IN A MULTIVITAMIN. I FOUND THAT IF YOU GET A BLOOD TEST TO DETERMINE WHAT MINERALS ARE A LITTLE LOWER & ONLY TAKE THOSE SUPPLEMENTS, YOU DONT GAIN WEIGHT. SINCE YOUR ONLY TAKING WHAT YOUR BODY NEEDS. MULTIVITAMINS ARE GOOD FOR CHILDREN & PEOPLE THAT DONT EAT RIGHT OR DONT HAVE TIME TO EAT ON A REGULAR SCHEDULE. THEIR BODIES TEND TO BE LOWER ON MOST MINERALS, SO THEY HIGHLY BENEFIT FROM THEM. I HOPE THIS HELPS.

  • 42 chrismichael // Oct 5, 2011 at 10:05 pm

I have to agree with mary I think everyone’s bodies are different some of us need more than a certain vitamin than others I’ve been taking these GNC men’s multivitamins and have gained some weight back after loosing the weight neither has my diet or routine excercise has stopped. I honestly think they should have custom made vitamins for each person to fit what they need an idea to think about ;)

  • 43 emthomas10 // Oct 8, 2011 at 2:26 am

I started working out regularly 2 weeks ago along with vitamins every day. I’ve been taking a b complex, vitamin E, biotin, and green tea extract. I feel as if I’ve gained weight, but not fat. My stomach just seems to be constantly bloated. I agree with everyone else. I’ll stop taking them for a few days and see if I lose weight.

  • 44 Teresa // Nov 1, 2011 at 4:51 pm

I am also a Weight Watchers member who had lost 30 pounds. At the time I started the WW program I started taking a multivitamin. For the past year of so I began taking more vitamins, B6, B12, D, E. Over the past year or so I have gained some of the weight back. I work out regularly and this past Summer I even increased my exercise..the gym 2 to 3 days a week, and I began walking 3 to 4 days a week, at a fast pace, some days as many as 9 miles, and never less than 5. Still continued with my WW plan, but I did not lose even one single pound! Talk about discouraging. For the past several days I have quit taking the multivitamins and most of the other vitamins. Over the past couple of days, my weight has begun to go down….FINALLY! I am going to stay off the vitamins for a while and see if I can lose again.

I am currently trying to get pregnant with my second. I am 5’7 and have been at a constant 117 my whole life. I had a miscarriage 7 months ago and started taking prenatels, b vit, calc, vit-d, royal jelly…I am the heaviest that i have ever been!!!! I wighted this evening (i normally weigh when i first wake up) and I am at 134! this weight gain is from the last 5 months. i fit in NONT of my clothes and have blamed it on the vitamins. Family, friends, even my dr laugh at me when i say that it is the vit. So i am not taking them anymore–i will work this weight off and see how true i am! i am happy that others are saying the same thing!! i am not a crazy woman!!!! keep me updated on the weight loss after stopping these!

I started taking a multi vit recently and have put on almost 3 kg in 2 weeks! This is despite the fact I am a university athlete swimming, running and working out 15-20 hours a week. Also I have never had issues losing weight and in the past have actually found it difficult to put on muscle mass. My sport demands that I maintain a constant weight so I’m glad I found these posts and avoided a complete disaster. Thanks everyone for sharing their experiences :) .

I have been struggling with weight gain for several years now. I am in Mean-o-pause (menopause) and it’s frustrating. I take vitamins and have for many years – makes me wonder now (after readinig all the comments) if vitamins may be part of the problem. Would love to hear from some other ladies who are going through menopause. Note: I work out (including weights) and eat pretty healthy. So, I’m not a couch potato.

  • 50 Anna // Dec 15, 2011 at 10:31 pm

OMG!!! Finally I found other people with the same problem! My weight was 95-100 lbs, it was before I started to take multivitamins+C+B100+D. Thought it’ll help me to loose even more but NO.:,( Now I’m 110lbs! It was just a month ago since I started taking them! Was wearing jeans size “0″, now can’t put them on. Husband says -drink water etc., but I see that it’s better TO STOP TAKING THOSE VITAM! Thanks.;)

  • 51 Wendy Hess // Dec 20, 2011 at 8:26 am

I am in Peri-Menopause and in 6 months gained 5 pounds a month and then it stopped at a 30 pound gain, i guess that is my cellular threshold, anyway i know it is water…no, i am not in denial, you can tell, my eyes are puffy, ankles and of course every other part of my body.
I was 136lbs which is good for a lady who is 5’6″
okay, so now i am 166lbs.
I dont need to tell you ladies (or Men ) what this does to a persons mind and heart.
Now, with the weight gain came the low blood sugar and anxiety/insomnia, all part of Peri, BUT there was one thing I was doing that i think made a difference, i take anywhere from 1000 to 8000 mg of Vit C a day, since i suffer from Fibromyalgia due to to Chronic Epstein Barr Virus.
It REALLY is the only thing that gives me energy and helps with the muscle pain. Only i had feeling it was making my situation worse.
I ALSO read that Vit C. ups your Estrogen levels, and when you are in Peri-Meno the last thing you want is to have more Estrogen on top of Estrogen Dominance. Soo….
For the last 2 years the weight has stayed since the whole thing began, but one month i decided to try and stay away from Vit. C and i lost 5 pounds, DOING NOTHING ELSE, just not taking the C.
The VERY next day after i got back on it, the weight started to creep back up.

I LOVE Vitamin C!!!! so ask me if i gave it up?
no.. i am addicted to it, to me it is my Natural Aspirin, WHY oh WHY must this be?
of course i can get my C from lemons and Limes, but it is NOT the same as my lovely little Vit C pill.
I stopped 2 days ago, and i lost 2 pounds, i keep telling myself it is a coincidence so i dont have to give up my drug, but i know better.
Life is for sure not fair.
I will be taking Acidolpolus for the Epstein Barr virus, but is NOT the same. Boo Hoo!
to chose between feeling a little better and being skinny!!!

    Hope this helps,

    Wendy.

Im a 41 year old male with diabetes. I started taking a men’s multivitamin supplement and a 1000mg of fish oil daily. In the beginning of Nov of 2011 my weight was 201 lbs. Now in January of 2012 I weigh 231 lbs. I take insulin 3x a day. I thought it was my medication. Come to find out by reading this blog my weight gain is attributed to the multivitamin I was taking. My intake for insulin has also increased. I’m going to stop taking the vitamins ASAP. Thank you all for this information.

I started vitamin b at high doses because it is supposed to help with neuropathy. I spent $50 on this cure all mixture of vitamin B’s. I weighed 108 before starting and 8 days later weigh 115. I hope I lose it as fast as I gained it. Do you think I will lose it or will I have to work at it? I have always had a high metabolism and I won’t be happy if it has changed it.

  • 56 Wendy Hess // Jan 28, 2012 at 7:10 am

    Amy,

if it was the B- Vits, then it will come off.
Was there any other Vitamins in with them?
By the way i tried B-50 for my Fibromyalgia a few years back before i knew it was an Autoimmune Disorder, thinking it would help the Carpal Tunnel etc…
and nooo, it make my hands fall asleep up to the elbow, and i was only taking 50mgs a day, i thought that only happenend (with B-6) when you go over 50mgs. Oh well, i stopped and so did the tingling.
    What is causing your Neuropathy?
Did you know the Diabetes II can cause that?
not trying to scare you, just be informed.
Doesnt sound like Diabetes, since you are not of the over weight persuasion.
Weird too, you’d think the B-6 in the Multi B would make you pee.
    Go figure.
I took Guiffenesin for Fibro YEARS ago, all it did was to make me retain water.
